In the world of tactical video games it is easy to find a source of inspiration. Experimenting and trying new things is fine, but when you have at your fingertips the foundations laid by others and you value their work, the best form of flattery, as they say, is imitation. This is the case of Toge Productions, an indie development studio based in Indonesia that, inspired by great classics like Front Mission, have launched to develop their own tactical vision of warfare between huge mechas. Kriegsfront Tactics is, in essence, a classic turn-based RPG that doesn't risk too much, but what it does do, it does well.
Although the demo available on Steam only lets you play two combat missions, it has been enough for a first approach to its gameplay mechanics. Basically, Kriegsfront Tactics does not differ much from other more well-known tactical RPGs, but it does include some of its own ideas that, as a whole, consolidate agile and fun mechanics.

An example of this is the manual aiming system that has been implemented for each unit. As was already the case in Phoenix Point, our units can manually aim to specifically damage some part of the enemy mechas. This gives each confrontation a layer of three-dimensionality that I miss in other titles, and that is executed well here.
On the other hand, each unit has certain action points, and each action consumes a portion of those points, so it will be essential to use our skills wisely if we do not want to see how our mechas jump through the air. Literally.
A striking aspect of Toge Productions' work is the artistic design of their game. Kriegsfront Tactics has a low-poly graphic design that is very reminiscent of the era of the first PlayStation, where pixels like fists occupied the screen. Personally, I loved the artistic decision chosen, because while I was sweeping the map with my mechas I felt real nostalgia. Playing Kriegsfront Tactics reminded me of another era where games felt fresh and original, but this time in high resolution and with a consistent FPS rate.

As far as the story is concerned, there is not much to tell. We still know very little about its plot, except for the few hints that its authors tell us in the description of the game. Kriegsfront Tactics places us in Southeast Asia in the 1970s, and proposes us to be the military commander of a special mechanized unit that must infiltrate between enemy lines to quell a conflict. Nothing original, it is true, but it is enough to get you started.

There are still other key aspects to be known. For example, the game uses procedural technology to create the missions, and we still do not know to what extent these can change, the scenarios and the position of the enemies, and if all this will positively affect its replayability. We also know little about the main characters, the game modes, the length of the campaign or whether or not it will include a multiplayer mode. However, what we have seen so far is interesting enough for any lover of turn-based tactical RPGs to add it to their Steam wish list.
